Del Mar
This small seaside village, located about 20 minutes north of downtown San Diego, is famous for its beautiful beaches and vistas, The Del Mar Racetrack, and the quaint Del Mar Village. About 4,500 people live in two-mile coastal area of Del Mar.
Del Mar dates back to the late 1800s, when Colonel Jacob Taylor purchased 338 acres from Enoch Talbert in 1885 with the hopes of building an oceanside resort for the rich and famous. The vision eventually came to fruition. Modern day Del Mar village is best perused on foot, so you can easily stroll in and out of the 60-plus specialty shops and 25 world-class restaurants, many of which offer amazing views of the Pacific Ocean.
In 1936, 50,000 people came to enjoy the first annual San Diego County Fair at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, which became the permanent location for the fair. The final touch on the fairgrounds was the mile-long racetrack, called the Del Mar Turf Club. Bing Crosby, an American singer and actor, was one of the leaders of the Del Mar Racetrack effort. The track opened on July 3, 1937. In 1938 Crosby recorded a song that has been associated with the race track ever since, “Where the Turf Meets the Surf.”
Every year racing season brings huge crowds to Del Mar. It also prompted celebrities like Pat O’Brein, Lucy and Desi Arnaz, Angie Dickenson, and celebrity physician Marcus Rabwin to make Del Mar their home. The racetrack was closed during World War II and the grandstand was used for bomber tail assembly. Racing returned to Del Mar when the war ended.
The public schools in Del Mar have exemplary ratings. Parents appreciate the rich traditions steeped into the school culture. Many say that the public schools have a private school feel with the benefits of a highly dedicated teaching and administrative staff.
