Canary Islands
Located off the coast of mainland Africa, the Canaries are an archipelago of seven Spanish islands renowned for their climate, volcanic landscapes, and beaches.
Tenerife is the largest island and with the highest peak in Spain, two world heritage sites and one national park, its natural environment is diverse and breathtaking. Mount Teide is also the highest point above sea level in the islands of the Atlantic, which the aboriginal Gaunches believed held up the sky. Teide National Park is one of the most popular in the world.
The island is celebrated for its gold and black beaches, which are both tranquil and ideal for water sports such as wind surfing. In Tenerife you will find golden beaches nestled between clear waters and striking mountainous backdrops.
There is a strong sense of tradition and heritage on the island demonstrated by events enjoyed by islanders and visitors alike. The world-famous Carnival of Santa Cruz sees celebrations take to the streets of the capital with musicians, minstrels, and masquerades in February each year. The oldest religious festival Corpus Christi or ‘flower festival’ sees locals decorate the streets with carpets of petals. Santa Cruz is a real cosmopolitan center and is home to the Parliament of the Canary Islands; it draws many visitors with art galleries, renowned restaurants, and Las Teresitas beach.
In typically Spanish style, there are numerous picturesque villages and bougainvillea-lined paths with views across the ocean on the island. There are also different types of property including townhouses, luxurious villas and exclusive estates. Tenerife is popular with families because of the combination of good schools, both English and Spanish, and activities such as leisure parks, popular golf courses, and designer shopping.
