Rumson
With its easy access to lower Manhattan via New York Bay, Rumson, New Jersey, has attracted wealthy financiers and industrialists alike since the 1800s, who came and built showplace homes with sweeping water views on multiple acres, and traveled to work by boat.
A mere 5.2 square miles, this Monmouth County municipality is bound by the Navesink and Shrewsbury Rivers, and is just a mile west of the Jersey Shore coastline. Today, it still attracts the likes of Wall Street executives who commute via a 45-minute high speed ferry to the financial district in Manhattan.
But Rumson is comprised of more than just grand estates. Interspersed among the mansions are charming cottages and bungalows, and residents who take pride in the beauty of this waterside gem. There’s no need to buy a summer home when living in Rumson. Golf, tennis, swimming, sailing, and fishing are activities readily enjoyed by the town’s residents.
With six public parks, a public boat ramp, an active recreation program, and the newly restored Bingham Hall Community Center, there really is something for everyone.
The Sea Bright Lawn Tennis and Cricket Club was founded by Rumson’s elite in 1877 after tennis was introduced in the United States and still enjoys an active membership today. Facilities include 15 lawn tennis courts, 15 Har-Tru courts, one hard court, and four platform courts. The club is featured in the National Register of Historic Places and has been designated a National Historic Landmark.
Established in 1908, the Rumson Country Club offers golf, sailing, tennis, croquet, and a 40-slip boat marina for its guests. The Riverhouse is its newest waterfront facility with dining, swimming and a popular summer camp.
The Rumson Borough School District was recently designated as a high performing district by the New Jersey Department of Education. Rumson’s children attend the Deane Porter School for grades K-3, the Forrestdale School for grades 4-8, and Rumson-Fairhaven Regional High School for grades 9-12.
Some of the area’s finest beaches are nearby; Newark International Airport and JFK are less than 25 miles away, and both high speed rail and express buses provide alternatives to the ferry into New York.
If angling is your hobby, the Navesink and Shrewsbury rivers provide some of the best fishing in New Jersey with the catch of the day being anything from striped bass, bluefish, weakfish, and summer flounder to many species of crab.
A special place to call home, residents and tourists alike will appreciate the salty air, abundant space, and elegant architectural beauty found in this “area of the two rivers.”
