Coronado

Situated across the bay from downtown San Diego, the enchanting city of Coronado is known as ‘The Crowned City,’ Spanish for ‘the crowned one.’ Boasting a rich history, the city has become a favored resort destination for generations of Californians thanks to its silvery white sand beaches, diverse cultural attractions, and year-round Mediterranean climate.

Coronado is often referred to as an island, though it is actually a peninsula. Coronado is connected to the mainland by a 10-mile isthmus (a narrow strip of land connecting two larger land areas) called the Silver Strand. Locals sometimes refer to this charming community as ‘The Island’ or ‘Coronado Island.’

A premiere resort destination, Coronado’s crown jewel is the famous and historic Hotel Del Coronado– ‘The Del’ or the ‘Hotel Del’ if you’re a local–which was opened in 1888. When it opened it was the largest resort hotel in the world and the first to use electrical lighting. ‘The Del’ is one of the oldest all-wooden buildings in California and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1977.

In 1969 the wide-spanning Coronado Bridge was opened, despite protests from many locals. Before the bridge, commuters had to rely on passenger ferries to get to San Diego. The bridge opening led to the influx of thousands of daily vehicles and promoted the city to install its first traffic signals. Today, the bridge is as much a fixture of San Diego’s landscape as the Pacific shoreline itself.

Coronado is home to a large number of retired military personnel, and its streets are meticulously manicured and feature beautifully cared-for homes, some of which are more than 100 years old. A Norman Rockwell-esque community, Coronado also has highly rated schools, making it one of the premier zip codes in all of San Diego County.
